The Easy Way To Prepare for Autumn

The Easy Way To Prepare for AutumnAs the Fall approaches, you will want to get your house ready so that it comfortable for the cooler weather. In order to do this, you should take care of your lawn, fireplace, windows and insulation. Read on to learn more about the easy way to prepare for Autumn.

Autumn Lawn Care

With autumn on its way, now is the time to prepare your lawns and gardens for cool weather. Place mulch or hay over cold-sensitive root systems, and check trees for dead branches. Remove dead branches and trim overhanging tree limbs to prevent damage caused by heavy snows. If you need to sow grass seed, do so early in autumn and water the grass frequently until it is well-established.

Prepare Your Fireplace

Check the fireplace, damper and surrounding areas for signs of rust or other damage, and scrub the inside of the fireplace and chimney thoroughly with a chimney brush to remove creosote before using the fireplace. To reduce heat loss, close the damper when the fire isn’t burning to keep cold air from entering through the chimney.

If you want to increase the efficiency of your fireplace, consider upgrading your fireplace doors to glass and installing an air-heat exchange system. If you want to install a fireplace to supplement other heat sources, opt for an energy-efficient fireplace to ensure lower operating costs and maximum heat output.

Upgrade Your Windows

Autumn is an ideal time to install new, energy-efficient windows. Double-paned storm windows can reduce heating and cooling costs by up to 20 percent annually, while windows with a low-e coating help keep heated air inside the home. If upgrading your windows isn’t an option, inspect the existing windows in your home to determine whether they are properly insulated. Drafty windows typically require additional insulation.

Upgrade Your Insulation

Adding more, or installing new, insulation allows you to save on heating and cooling costs. Insulation prevents the transfer of heat and maintains a comfortable, consistent temperature inside the home. Most homeowners can benefit from having the existing insulation inspected, as homes that are over 10 years old may not have enough, or the right type, of insulation installed.
